HOW TO BECOME A MODEL PART 2

Season 2023 / Episode 6

Research the modelling agency you want to work with

Before you register with an agency, it is a good idea to do some research. Make a list of things to dig into. First and most important is the legitimacy of the agency. Is there any information online regarding the agency you are looking into? Are there any bad reviews? Is this agency currently looking for models with your measurements and appearance?

model - Teodora Maude, photographer - Verginia YanchevaWhat does the registration or application process entail? What are the exact requirements of the agency? This may vary for each agency but you will be able to find the information on their website. Can you find out about any current or former models of the agency? WHat kind of campaigns has the agency participated in? Does the agency work with well-established brands and companies? Do you want this agency to represent you? This means that you will in turn represent them.

After finding a modelling agency that you like and feel confident that they are suitable for them and vice versa, fill in the application form and send them your photos and/or polaroids.  After you have sent your data, you will receive a call and the agency will let you know if they want to set up a meeting with you. Make sure to do some more research before the meeting. Find out more about the fashion and modelling industry, famous brands, current top models and fashion, beauty and modelling events. It is not necessary to obtain encyclopaedic knowledge of the modelling field but instead aim to be well informed and make conscious decisions.

Learn to accept rejection

Prepare yourself mentally for rejection. You should be able to handle a door closing in your face without any second thoughts. model - Victor, photographer - Tsanislav Hristov

Even the best supermodels have gone through rejection. They have heard the word “No” many times, in many different ways, from many people. Rejection is part of career development. The sooner you understand and accept this, the better you will feel in the future. Don't build your self-esteem solely on your appearance or someone else's approval of you. Start practising self-development by challenging yourself to ignore any criticism you've received this week. At the end of the week, ponder if it was difficult or easy for you to do this? The harder it was for you, the more you should practise. Start practising the skill of ignoring criticism and don’t worry because anyone can develop this skill with practice.

Aim to look your best constantly

Take good care of your skin, hair and general health. model - Julia, photographer - Lora Slavova

It is an undebatable fact that models are part of an industry that works with appearances. Therefore, the outer beauty is of high importance. Take into consideration that you can be a model regardless of physical appearances and body shape (for some types of models this is not a requirement, e.g. commercial models).

Read about the types of models here: Part 1, 2, 3 and 4.

It is up to you to take full advantage of your genes. If you want to become a model you have to develop a strict beauty routine. Many supermodels are known for having the following habits: drinking water throughout the day to stay hydrated and moisturise their skin, no smoking and minimal usage of alcohol.

Other habits you can develop are exfoliating, washing, hydrating your face in the morning and in the evening, applying SPF protection, taking your makeup off before going to bed, making regular manicure, pedicure and hair appointments, taking vitamins, training 4-5 days a week, eating a balanced diet, etc. Looking your best will help you in both your personal and professional life. It is a win-win situation.

Be careful

As a model you are fairly vulnerable starting your career. model - Julia, photographer - Lora Slavova

Be careful and stay safe. Do not fall for fake advertisements of model schools (you don’t always need to pay money to attend a model school or training). When beginning your career as a model you should not be required to pay for photoshoots. Your mother agency should book you a test photoshoot. There are a lot of scams out there, for example pageants, immoral scout agents, casting directors and photographers, fake casting calls offering huge sums of money. Always share your career plans and what you do with your friends and family. They can give you good advice if something sounds strange or unusual. They can also accompany you to a photoshoot and wait until you are done. People close to you will provide help and support if you encounter a difficult situation or get rejected. Keep safe and build yourself a good support system!
