In our previous episode we discussed how to get discovered by a modeling agency. Now it is time to talk about what agencies expect from a model during their first meeting. Here are some helpful tips on how to prepare for a successful meeting with an agent or booker.
“There is no second chance to make a first impression,” says French fashion designer Coco Chanel, who changed the fashion world with her revolutionary style.
Let this phrase inspire you to show up as your best self at every business meeting. A foundational aspect of every model’s career is having good professional relationships with their agency built on mutual trust and honesty.
First, we advise you to do some research on the agency you are applying to and have scheduled a meeting with. Look for information about the agency’s past, reputation, and the type of models they are looking for. If possible, ask for opinions from friends and professionals in the field.Next, prepare a portfolio if you have previous experience in modelling. If you don’t have any professional photos, you can ask a friend or a loved one to take pictures of you, focusing on your natural look and showcasing different expressions in the shots.
Dress appropriately for the business meeting. We recommend choosing black or blue jeans and a simple blouse, tank top with thin straps, or a T-shirt, preferably in black or white. Women should wear heels, and men should wear clean shoes.
The agency will want to see your physical condition and shape, so make sure to have a neat and clean appearance, with little to no makeup and a simple hairstyle. Bear in mind that the agent will take your measurements, a few photos, and ask you to walk so they can see how you move. You can practice walking and posing in front of a mirror.
