The differences between a modelling agency and a casting agency

Season 2025 / Episode 15

In today's article, we will describe some key differences between casting agencies and fashion agencies and their roles in talent careers.

Modelling agency

A modelling agency represents models and finds them work in the fashion industry, such as at fashion shows, in advertisements and other promotional activities. It works as an intermediary between the client/casting agency and the model, negotiating and signing contracts on behalf of its models and helping them create and improve their portfolio. Modelling agencies maintain a close professional relationship with each model/talent to understand which type of work commitments are best suited to them. They also partner with production companies, casting agencies, photographers, videographers, hairdressers, makeup artists, designers, fashion houses and stylists.

Casting agency

Casting agencies specialise primarily in finding the right talent for specific roles in film, television, theatre, commercials and other media projects. They work with the production (the producers and the brand) and are involved in the casting and selection of roles, casting and choosing the right individuals for each role. Typically they do not represent their own talent, but rather work with local talent agencies to find the best ones. However, some agencies have a large personal database of people who have already auditioned and can contact them for future engagements. Casting agents are often in contact with entertainment industry professionals, such as production companies and directors.

Casting agencies and fashion agencies play a key role in their respective areas of the entertainment and fashion industry. Understanding the difference between these agencies can help aspiring actors and models navigate their careers more effectively and choose the right type of agency for their career needs.
