What is a mother agency?

Season 2025 / Episode 16

The mother agency is the main manager of a model's career. It usually works on the progress of the model from the very beginning and represents the model before third parties (clients, other agencies, etc.). The agency has bookers (agents) among whom the models are distributed. That is, one booker is in charge of several models and keeps in touch with them. It's a good idea to reach out to your booker and ask for advice and support when you need it. That way your booker will know exactly what fits your expectations and character and can offer you more suitable engagements.

In countries like Bulgaria, where the fashion business is not so advanced it is the accepted model to have only one mother agency in the country. In other countries such as the USA, the mother agency may send the model from a smaller to a larger city (e.g. New York) to secure more engagements. In the bigger city, the model will be represented by a local agency to which the mother agency assigns rights. That is, a model can have a mother agency in the country where the model lives and be represented by other agencies (secondary agencies) in different parts of the world.

Therefore, in Bulgaria, it is not acceptable for a model to work with two Bulgarian agencies at the same time because this creates a conflict of interest and confuses the narrow range of clients in the country. Each model has the right to change its mother agency if necessary. However, we must add that changing your mother agency does not positively influence a model’s career. Before you choose an agency, do some research and make sure you are happy with the company that is going to represent you.

When a Bulgarian model works abroad, they may be represented by multiple agencies (even several in the same country but from different cities).
