Today we will discuss what casting calls are and how to get ready for them.
The word casting comes from cast, which means to throw. For example, in the phrase "cast a vote" - cast my lot. Hence, it is the process of assigning roles in a play, movie, advertisement, fashion show, etc. Each of these products has a great pre-planning team behind it which organizes the process step by step. A client, for example a major sports brand, contacts a production company and an advertising agency to execute the brand's idea for an advertising campaign. Then, in turn, the production company and advertising agency begin forming the entire team that will bring the commercial to life from start to finish. In some cases, a casting agency may also be involved, which specifically handles finding advertising faces. If there is no such agency, this is carried out by the advertising agency. Sometimes these three types of companies may be combined into one.
During the casting each participant is given specific tasks. These will vary according to the role and the type of commercial you are auditioning for. If you participate in a casting you will get your tasks described in steps. Most often they work like this:
In a short clip, introduce yourself in a few words:
- For example, in English or Bulgarian say your name, your height, whether you have previous experience.
- Show the palms of your hands on either side to the camera.
- Turn around so that the camera takes your right profile, your back and your left profile. Then a few photos will be taken of you in the same way including full body and close-up (as well as the previous point with your hands.)
Perform a short acting task.
- For example, dance to certain music. There are many options here, because each task is a snippet of what you will need to perform as the character you are impersonating. All tasks are short and usually take no more than 1-2 minutes to film. It is best to relax, be natural, and talk to your agency colleagues if you have questions, concerns, or just want to practice.
It is important to comply with dress code or accessory requirements if any. If there are none, then the rule of thumb of a simple look in neutral colours, clean clothes and a neat and tidy appearance applies.
Have fun during the casting because this is a time to break away from your usual self.
