Polaroids and why you might need them

In the modelling industry the terms ‘polaroid’. ‘digitals’ or ‘snaps’ refer to a simple photo with a clear background without any manipulations. One of the main requirements is for the model to wear simple clothes, no makeup (a clean face), no hairstyle, no jewellery and other accessories. It is also not necessary to strike any poses. Instead, have a natural posture and relax your shoulders. When this is set up, photos are taken in full-body (full face and profiles), close up of the face (full face and profiles) and 3/4 (full face and profiles).

It is important to dress in neutral colours, for example the most preferred colours are white and black because they highlight a person's features by making them stand out. Moreover, polaroids are presented to clients who want to see the natural image of the model without any make-up or hairstyle. Then the client can consider if they want to hire the model and what look would suit them best. If you have any imperfections on your face or body or any tattoos, do not worry about taking photos of yourself. The agency and clients must know about such peculiarities. 

You can take your digitals at home on your own or with the help of a friend or relative. It is best to take them in natural daylight and follow the requirements of this article. If you are part of an agency, your booker will be responsible for the digitals and will give you tips for every casting where they are required.

In addition to the digitals, agencies and clients will usually ask models to record a short video presentation, where the model says a few words about themselves and shows their hands and profiles. It is a good idea to end the video by striking a few simple poses. The video confirms that the polaroids have not been edited and shows how the model moves and talks naturally. It can be done in English and/or Bulgarian.
