Be a professional
Being a model is not an easy task. You have to be a professional in every regard and answer phone calls, voice messages and emails promptly. It is unacceptable to be 30 minutes late for a meeting, casting or photoshoot. On the contrary, you must arrive at the venue 15 minutes earlier. This requires planning and time management skills.
Ambitious models make a huge mistake when adopting the following way of thinking: “I am beautiful enough to be a model so I will count on my appearance and I will make menial effort”. There are many cases of promising models who did not make it in the fashion industry because their lack of professionalism, bad behaviour and reputation overpowered their beauty.
When accepting a work engagement you are representing yourself and your agency. Therefore, on set you must treat everyone with respect. If the makeup artist has received specific instructions regarding the make up, which they followed, but you don’t like the result this is not good. However, she has done her job and you have to do yours. Do your best on set even if you do not like the makeup without making any mean comments to the artist or other members of the team. Respect and kindness will bring you a long way in the modelling industry.
Be devoted to your work
A model’s life may look easy and glamorous but this is not the reality. In order to become a model you have to be committed. Are you ready to be on a balanced diet, go to the gym and take care of yourself and your appearance in your freetime? Are you willing to work on set for 12 or more hours at a time regardless of the weather conditions and without complaining?
Will you accept the fact that it might take you years after you have signed a contract with an agency to reach success whilst your agency works to develop your career? Would you like to travel abroad for long periods of time and be away from your home, family, friends and partner?
Are you ready to work extra hours when needed? If your agency wants you to change your hairstyle or colour, will you be willing to do it? These questions are not asked in order to frighten you in any way. Being a model can be a fun, rewarding, exciting and glamorous experience. Make sure you are aware of both the positive and the negative sides of modelling.
Build your following on social media
If you are an ambitious person, you are probably looking for a modelling agency to represent you. As we have already mentioned, you can send us your photos in the Become e model section on our website. You can also keep practising your posing and catwalk and establish a beauty routine while waiting for a reply from an agency.
In the meantime, you can build your following on social media. This will help you sign a contract with an agency.
Nowadays, agencies take into consideration the following of future models on social media when deciding whether to sign with them or not.
Advertisers work with models all the time and they need such models who have a larger following so as to reach more people. The larger following is not a requirement to become a model but it is an important factor when applying for some work engagements. Building your following should not be your only goal. You must be clear about who you are, show your followers an authentic version of yourself and post amazing photos. You can develop this even further and writ your own blog or set up a YouTube channel.
Keep your dignity
Last but not least, it is very important to keep your dignity. All else aside, you are a valuable human being, who has valid feelings, thoughts and opinions.
You are much more than a beautiful face. Most models accept the work offered to them by their agency. This is perfectly fine and quite normal. However, if something makes you feel uncomfortable or crosses a line you should speak up and stand by your opinion before it is too late. We previously mentioned that commitment to work is an important condition for success. However, there is a line that must not be crossed. You must never devote so much to your work that it becomes more important than you and your needs. What are your goals? Establish this at the very beginning and actively pursue your goals. The less you worry about other people’s acceptance and approval, the better you will feel.
